There is a growing trend towards taking your dog on holiday and fortunately there are accommodation places that have altered their policies to welcome family pets. There is a range of pet-friendly accommodation around the world, from bed and breakfasts to resorts, camping grounds to private hotels.

There are a number of things that you should consider before taking your dog on holiday.

  • Contact the destination before taking your dog on holiday as there are often conditions relating to pets staying that you may need to know about.
  • Take some identification for your pet, for example your registration papers and vaccination card.
  • Make sure your dog is has a collar on him/her at all times and that attached is an ID tag with your dog’s name, your name, address and phone number.
  • Take towel/towels with you in case they get wet, require a bath, or get sick.
  • New environments can result in animals easily becoming stressed and this can affect their behaviour, digestive patterns and impact on you and your pet’s enjoyment of the holiday. Ensure you take a familiar object such as a blanket, toy or bed. This can help ease the animal into the new surroundings.
  • Visit your vet before taking your dog on holiday to get a check-up of your dog’s health, find out if any vaccinations required for the area you are visiting.  It is also a good idea to get a print out of your pet’s medical history in case of an emergency.
  • Please respect the rules where you are staying, especially regarding your pet. To have your dog with you on holidays is a privilege and the better behaved your dog, the more other accommodation venues will open their doors to you taking your dog on holiday.
